Gibraltar/ Sevastopol’s soccer season came to a heart-breaking end yesterday in Wrightstown when the Vikings lost 2-1 in overtime. A win would have sent the Vikings to state.

The season was the best in the program’s history, as they tied Sturgeon Bay for the conference title and advanced to the sectional final for the first time ever. In fact, it was one of the best showings by a Gibraltar team ever. Since 1979, when baseball won a state title, only cross-country, golf, and track individuals have advanced further.

Football makes playoffs, soccer one game from state

For a decade, they didn’t win a game. One season, they scored 12 points. But last night the Gibraltar Vikings football team advanced to the playoffs for the first time in its history by defeating Reedsville 36 - 26 in Fish Creek.

That win came just hours after the Gibraltar/ Sevastopol soccer team beat Wrightstown in Baileys Harbor to advance to the sectional final, 1 - 0. It will be the Vikings first trip to the sectional final, the culmination of a steady evolution into a soccer power. If the Vikings win Saturday in Wrightstown, they will become the first Gibraltar team to go to state in a team sport since the baseball team won it all back in 1979.

Dalton Witallison scored the game’s only goal with about 20 minutes to play.

The Viking football team was led by seniors Tom Sawyer and Mitch Weborg as they overcame a 4th quarter deficit against Reedsville. Weborg provided the power, bowling over defenders on a sloppy field, while Sawyer’s shiftiness was difficult to contain as he scored two fourth quarter touchdowns. Adam Breseman came up big with a late fumble recovery near midfield.

In Green Bay, the Sturgeon Bay Clippers saw their stellar season come to an end in a 3 - 0 loss to Green Bay Notre Dame.

REC_Boat on Edge

By Myles Dannhausen Jr.

It’s hard to believe, but the war in Afghanistan is in its ninth year, with no end in sight. In the Sunday New York Times Magazine, Dexter Filkins wrote a great article about Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s efforts to reshape the battle in what is considered some of the world’s most brutal terrain. It’s worth a read, particularly as President Obama considers whether to send another 40,000 troops to the country to push back the Taliban.

When Donald Driver broke Sterling Sharpe’s Packer record for career receptions yesterday and became the most prolific pass-catcher in the history of the 90-year-old franchise, it marked the pinnacle of the under-appreciated career for one of the sport’s good guys.

Driver was a little-known, little-used 7th round draft pick coming off a forgettable rookie year in April of 2000 when he visited the Sister Bay Bowl to appear at a youth sports banquet. I was in my first year running Husby’s in Sister Bay at the time, but was in Milwaukee at a food show that night. I called in to check on the restaurant (which was a catastrophe, but that’s a longer story for another blog) and my mom told me there was somebody who wanted to speak to me.
